5 Unexpected Songs I Keep Hearing on 104.5 The Pirate FM.
In Pearl, MS, there’s a station called 104.5 ‘The Pirate’ (said in the most drawly Southern accent you can possibly imagine.) Wikipedia says their slogan is “We play everything!… well… almost.” I believe that. This is why I believe that.
FIVE: HERO — ENRIQUE IGLESIAS
These aren’t ‘weird’ songs as in they’re bad songs. These are weird songs as in “huh, I didn’t expect to hear this song on the radio in the first place.” Case in point, when was the last time you heard Enrique Iglesias on any sort of mainstream radio station.
FOUR: KICKSTART MY HEART — MOTLEY CRUE
I was halfway tempted to put Motley Crue first but I decided to make it number four just so you think you have a good idea of the station’s demographic with cheesy Enrique but nope, have a Motley Crue song right behind it as well.
THREE: GOOD GIRL — CARRIE UNDERWOOD
This isn’t even one of the really good Carrie Underwood songs. It’s just a decent one. So why have I heard it at least ten times on The Pirate? The sad thing is, The Pirate is also home to a regular rotation of country singers named Chris, Drew, Brett, or Kit that could easily have gone here but I can’t tell them apart from each other. So, Carrie Underwood gets this spot instead.
TWO: PARADISE BY THE DASHBOARD LIGHT — MEATLOAF
It’s the full eight minute version. They even include the cheesy sexy baseball narration bit which is honestly a phrase that I never thought I’d write but here we are, it’s the year 2016 and there’s a radio station that’s playing the full eight minute version of a Meatloaf song and keeping in the cheesy sexy baseball narration bit.
ONE: WHAT IS LOVE — HADDAWAY
Why does a radio station in 2016 play “What Is Love” on a regular basis. I have absolutely no idea. I mean, I love it, but I’ve literally heard “What Is Love” at least once a week for the past year which is probably a greater amount than the combined total of how often 95% of America has heard “What Is Love.” Baby don’t hurt me no more.
