Men In A Bubble

When Roe was overturned, I thought it was the right decision.

That doesn’t mean I was in favor of restrictions on abortion, only that courts shouldn’t decide what a woman should do regarding their bodies. I believed that the voters in the states would decide. And I believed they would be much more pro-choice than most Republican legislators thought.

It appears I was right. In every state where the issue has come up for a vote, abortion rights have been affirmed by the voters. This has been to the consternation of Republican legislators that just can’t believe women and men want those brilliant legislators to stay out of making those decisions for them.

And that is why making abortion illegal seems to be so nonsensical to so many Americans. The act of having an abortion is something that is done in private, and the only people involved should be the woman, her healthcare professionals, and perhaps her family. No one is forced to undergo the procedure unless they consent.

Even if you wouldn’t have an abortion yourself, why would you try and stop someone else? What makes the abortion debate worse is that the legislatures that have criminalize and forbidden the procedure are dominated by old and middle-aged White men who are out of touch with 70% of the people on this issue.

So, the pro forces do not have the old White guys in their corner. Democracy is about the will of the majority. Unfortunately, these old White guys won’t accept the majority’s wishes. They want to do everything possible to inflict their moral codes on the rest of us. Since these old While men are overwhelmingly Republican, their party is now seen as trying to subvert the will of the people on one more subject.

When are they going to understand that by not allowing the people to be in charge, they will eventually lose? There is nothing that will prevent their predictable downfall. On this and other personal issues, these Republicans need to realize that trying to impose morality will only cost them the power that they crave in the long run.

American women are finding that these guys do not care about their health… only about a cause that is rejected by 70% of Americans. How many will continue to vote for misogynistic and sanctimonious Republicans who disregard the wishes of the voters? This may have been the cause that finally breaks the hold of voting party over a voter’s own interest for many.
