Meet Our Speakers: Eugene & Louise

Design is language. It’s a tool for communication. If done well it gives you a ticket into the world and minds of your target group. It enables you to get your message across, to offer valuable content in the most appropriate, accurate and attractive way.

Hi Eugene & Louise! We’re wondering how you describe what you do to friends and family. Enlighten us, please!

Eugene and Louise is a creative studio that focuses on illustration, character design, motion graphics and original content. So to put this in simple words: we make drawings and cartoons for advertisements, commercials and television. That’s basically what we do.

We also create our own original content, which is kind of our play garden. We’ve had Eugene and Louise Bakery, a project we did for a pop-up gallery in Antwerp. Then there’s the Pictureka! board game we co-invented, designed and sold to Hasbro. Together with Lannoo we created and published a children’s book called Meneertje Nee. And currently we’re focusing on our own animated series, mostly targeting preschool to upper preschool children.

What’s your favourite part of your job? And what’s the hardest?

We love the fact that we get a fresh start with every new project. And seeing our characters come to live in animation is always a magical experience. The downside of our job is probably the fact that clients not always go for the best creative solution. Unfortunately, good design often changes along the way.

It also takes a lot of patience, persistence and discipline to keep investing in our own projects without having the guarantee that it will actually be released. For instance: finding the right production company and enough funding to make it all happen is not an easy thing.

What do you regard as being your biggest achievement?

Our biggest achievement is probably Pictureka!, one of our own projects. This doodle-based board game got picked up by Hasbro and is being sold worldwide. Currently it consists of 14 games and is included in Hasbro Family Game Night 2. On top of that it was developed for the Wii by EA Games and had its own game show on The Hub (a Children’s Channel in the USA).

Pictureka! received the 2008 Grand Prix du Jouet award in France, the 2008 Games Toy of the Year award for Best Game in Australia, got nominated for the Toy of The Year awards in 2009 in the category Game of the Year and won Gold at the Moscow Toy Fair 2007 in the category best board and table game. The board game even got picked up by Ellen Degeneres on the Ellen Show!

But the current project that is the closest to our heart is definitely the animated series we’re working on.

What does design mean for you?

In our case design is language. It’s a tool for communication. If done well it gives you a ticket into the world and minds of your target group. It enables you to get your message across, to offer valuable content in the most appropriate, accurate and attractive way.

What’s the most important piece of advice you would like to pass to our community?

Believe in yourself, work hard, never loose your discipline and always catch your deadlines. But most importantly enjoy every second of it.
