The problem we face with internet regulation.
Currently we have services such as drop box, google drive and many other cloud storage services that allow us to host files such as photos, videos, and other important files on the internet. Although this is a convenience for us, it is also problematic with people’s data often being stolen, example being when celebrities have nude photo’s of them being leaked. The data is usually stolen via social engineering techniques people use against the organisation hosting the data. The data can also be accessed when law enforcement get a warrant to search through your data. Many business’s have also targeted cloud storage services for hosting pirated or illegal content.
The Government in Australia and many other Countries have tried to stop terrorists and pirating content by retaining all citizens meta data and denying access to particular websites even though these laws can be easily bypassed via encryption software and vpn’s.
One solution many have come up with to keep our data more secure is a open sourced decentralized cloud storage network, so far there are at least 3 organisation I know of doing this with many others coming up with their own iteration of it.
For the sake of this article I will give 1 example.
Say you’re an artist and you just made a song you would like to keep secure, through 1 of these decentralized networks you would be able to upload the song to a decentralized cloud storage network, the network would split the file in to 100 parts and encrypt each part with only you having the decryption key to it, each part would then be hosted on many computers encrypted so the people hosting it wouldn’t be able to see what it is. Each person hosting a part would be paid a small amount of Cryptocurrency by you every day.
Now the amazing upside about this is your data is completely secure, it’s encrypted on many computers and even if some one manages to decrypt a part they would still need all the other parts to read the file. The other innovation about this is there is no central organisation that has access to your account, only you have the key to your files.
But with every technological advancement there is a downside, with services such as this it would become near impossible to take down illegal content, even the most harsh content such as child pornography.
The question I ask is how do you, or can you even regulate something like this without taking someones privacy and rights?
