Swansea City marked a return to dominant form in the South Wales derby this weekend, as goals from Liam Cullen and Jamal Lowe sealed a 2–0 win over Cardiff City.

This victory makes it five wins for the Swans in the previous six meetings with Cardiff, in a fixture that means so much more than just three points.

In the week leading up to the derby, Swansea City held a fans forum in which the club’s dedication to the ‘Swansea Way’ was questioned.

Andy Coleman, Club Chairman, responded passionately as he remarked that the ‘Swansea Way’ meant more than just what happened on the pitch.

Luke Williams’ approach to the game encapsulated everything about the ‘Swansea Way’.

In the first half, the Swans possession-based style helped them to control the occasion, having 60% possession and creating 1.25 expected goals.

However, the response to Liam Cullen’s second half penalty miss and the celebrations of Jamal Lowe’s last-minute goal displayed what the ‘Swansea Way’ meant to the fans.

Liam Cullen said: “It’s why I love the club; it’s why I’ve supported the club my whole life. We are a family club, and I was so glad I could repay them with the goal and a win.”

These moments displayed a connection that was missing between the squad and fanbase during a toxic six months for the Swans.

Swans boss, Luke Williams, said: “We had the chef deliver the team talk, he is an example of what we call the ‘Swansea Way’. He has so much care, so much passion for the club and he spoke to us from his heart.”

After a tricky start to his time as Swansea City head coach, Luke Williams has certainly displayed his suitability to deliver a Swansea City team that the fanbase can connect with.

Steven Carroll, SOS fanzine editor and Jackcast member, said: “This fixture can always be a catalyst for a manager, there’s always far more than points at stake on derby day.”
