Air operated double diaphragm pump is a sub-category of diaphragm pumps, required for a number of applications. Let’s take a detailed look at it.

There are various types of positive displacement pumps for almost every type of application. This includes internal gear pump, external gear pump, peristaltic pumps, rotary lobe pumps, diaphragm pumps etc. Now, when it comes to diaphragm pumps there is a sub-category, which is known as air operated double diaphragm (AODD) pump.

You might be wondering what is an AODD pump, how it works, its advantages and various other things. So, let’s take a closer look at the functionality of air operated diaphragm pump.

What is an air operated diaphragm pump?

AODD pumps are actually a type of positive displacement pump which take the help of reciprocating action of elastomeric diaphragms and different check valves to pump fluids. Generally, flap or ball check valves are used. The type of check valve that must be used is determined based on the solid passing requirements of the application.

How does it work?

To move the diaphragm rod in the casing, air operated double diaphragm pumps use simple air-valve system. The diaphragms are round discs which are fixed at each end of the diaphragm rod. There are three horizontal rods and the middle one is called the pilot spool. It keeps moving back and forth whenever the diaphragm rod touches the end of casing. The circulating process distributes the air evenly at the valve to keep up the performance. It has a narrow rod which controls the air flow both in the right and left chamber of the pump.

Where can they be used?

AODD pumps are an excellent choice for industries including chemical, food, and general applications. They can transfer highly abrasive, semi-solid, viscous products and shear sensitive materials due to their unique design. Replacing and maintaining such pumps are also easier due to seal-less design. The pumps have self priming ability and can even run dry like other diaphragm pump.

The best part about these pumps is versatility. They come in different materials including stainless steel, cast iron, special alloys and can be attached with valve elastometers based on the application.

Things to look out for

You should remember to install proper pulsating dampening devices when working with AODD pumps. This is because, they generate a pulsating flow that causes the fluid to act like a “water hammer”. It is a kind of wave or pressure surge that makes the fluid change its direction, and that can sometimes harm the pump.

When you’re choosing to install an AODD pump, always consult with a reputed pump supplier in Wicklow to get the appropriate model.
