I Won’t Stand For The National Anthem Either

So, everyone is freaking out about a football player remaining seated during the National Anthem.

This is funny to me because I have been ignoring the National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance since my senior year of high school. As much as possible, anyway. I would stand at “attention” sometimes just because I didn’t feel like causing a confrontation. Now? I don’t care.

I am lucky to have been born in America. But as many things as there are to celebrate about the United States, there are just as many things not to celebrate.

Among those things are basic human rights. The United States doesn’t get cookies for having clean drinking water and rule of law (well, most of the time, anyway). Especially, when it lags behind other developed countries in so many important areas.

A lot of times, especially with the current election, I’m embarrassed to be an American. So, I’m not going to stand at attention for a song at random events. I’m not going to respect a piece of gaudy fabric because it happens to be my country’s flag. I’m not going to pledge my allegiance, under a god I don’t believe in, to a country I don’t actually owe allegiance to and plan not to live in my entire life.

And one of the best things about living in the United States? There’s not a goddamn thing anyone can do about it without stomping all over the freedom that they claim to hold so dear.
