Expert Intro—Julius Juul

At the age of 17 Julius started his own graphic and web design company, Julius Juul Studio. After graduating from STX he began his journey into the education of visual communication, a 3 year journey working in art direction, communication, design, photography and copywriting. Developing a strong interest in the fashion industry Julius began to work with clients such as: Kanye West, Michael Kors, Robert Geller, Hood By Air, Alexander Wang, Nike, Adidas, CondéNast and many others. In 2015, Julius worked with Kanye West on the YEEZY Season 1 and on personal projects with Kanye himself. In 2016, Julius and his brother Victor created a clothing brand — HELIOT EMIL™. Named after their great-grandfather, the HELIOT EMIL unisex collections feature a Scandinavian, monochromatic aesthetic with an attention to detail. In charge of all creative aspects of the company, Julius is inspired by thought-provoking themes and sources various fabrics around the world (along with customized Japanese trimmings) to realize each collection, and final garment production takes place in Italy, France and Portugal.
Where in the world are you right now? Where will you be next?
Paris airport, CDG. Going to London, then Berlin and Italy for manufacturing check up, then Copenhagen to finish the campaign and then to New York for my brand’s SS18 collection show. You caught be at a very busy time :D
What does “education” mean to you? How would you define it?
In terms of type of education where someone else is tells you how to solve some sort of problem I don’t really believe it has much place left in the world we live in now.
Educating yourself is a different story. You can’t really teach passion and if you have enough passion for something you will figure out a way to teach yourself.
Where do you think education is headed? Where will it be in 10 years? 100?
Of course, it will most definitely look very different from today, but it will still be here. And we need education. We just need to make sure that the general education follows the society that we live in, so we don’t end up spending too much time teaching something where the majority of the subject might be irrelevant and we forget to teach a subject which might be way more relevant to our current society.
Most frequently received (advice related) question?
I guess recently a lot of people have been DM’ing me about starting their own brand, and what sort of advice I would give them and asking me if I can give them feedback on their designs.
Why did you join th-oughts?
I think its a genius way of reaching out to ‘experts’ on a specific subject. I could have definitely used it when I first started out. I only hope I can give people some sort of help with their thoughts.
