1. Shop-able Runway
The Consumer market is moving more towards immediate gratification. We see this trend in all the social media channels, which are a favorite with the millenials and now generation Z. Taking a note of this change, we saw this runway seasons some designers defying the traditional way of presenting their collection and not making consumers wait for the runway looks. This year a lot of designer’s gave the consumers what they wanted by providing access to runway collection as the collection hit the runway. It is a great move in the ready to wear market. This fashion week might be the start to a big direct to customer movement. Rebecca Minkoff introduced #SeeBuyWear event where runway collection could be directly bought from the stores. . We did see even Michael Kors putting up few of his runway pieces from the runway on immediate sale. This customer centric approach definitely defines the future of fashion making 2016 a vital year to start this movement.
2. Rihanna vs Kanye
Musicians are making a foray into fashion. It seems an obvious extension for musicians to use their creativity to runway. For the last few seasons Yeezy collection has been a headlining show. This season was no different #Yeezy3 collection had an interesting standing runway presentation. Kanye rented out Madison Square Garden and made a musical performance with glamorous celebrities in attendance. This fashion week Rihanna debut her designer side. She collaborated with Puma to present Fenty Puma. This gothic inspired unisex collection featured oversize collection and she showcased rad wear which represented Rihanna in true sense.
3. Performance based presentation
Another trend that is on the upswing which dominated the fashion week at New York this year was the performance based presentation of the collection. There were a number of shows where the models sashayed on the beat of the music on the runway but brands have decided to depart from the traditional presentation to more innovative ones to embody the collection of the designer. Fashion is not just limited to the collection but the message and the presentation that goes along with it. This year few of our favorite presentations were: DVF: At this collection DVF wanted to showcase clothes that would be girl’s best friend. To show this, the collection was presented in a party theme where supermodels such as Karlie Kloss, Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner danced around in their DVF beautiful pieces. This made for a social media moment. Vfiles: Vfiles put together a truly democratic fashion show. Everyone involved with this fashion show was selected by a team of judges via vfiles.com. The show was presented with a marching band, a glow in the dark performance and a performance by Tyga . It was an innovative approach to traditional runway show.
4. Eye Catching Collections
Every fashion week we see a number of collections at different venues. This year among all the collections few that stood out to us were : Rodarte, which true to its theme showcased a dreamy collection. The collection was based on Art Nouveau romance. Each pieces included the details of the theme such as lace and furs. Another designer which vowed us by their presentation this season was Marc Jacobs. Apart from the styling and gothic makeup, Lady Gaga made her runway debut. This collection was full of surprises and truly an artistic piece where each piece told a story and took us back in time.
5. Streetstyle at sub-zero temp
The weekend temperature in NY put the fashionistas to test. This was a real challenge for all in attendance of the weeklong fashion week events. The problem was to look trendy and comfortable in the unbearable conditions. We did see a lot of mixing of prints, Over the knee boots, turtlenecks and shearling all over New York streets. The bloggers, fashion editors embraced the brutal winter and faced it with sartorial finesse. This season streetstyle gave us coat and layering inspiration and we cant wait to see what else this fashion month has in store for us.
