What is the difference between 2D, Fake 3D and Actual 3D Assets?

Before everything

We will not be humble. Because we have a revolutionary and highly advanced family of 3D rendering and game engine families, we need to create some technological terms or redefine some.

We don’t criticize the work of any person or company here. Here we only try to depict the differences between 3D and Fake 3D.

The Fake 3D

Images, gifs or videos rendered and exported from a 3D scene design are not authentic 3D artefacts or files. These are only 2D instances of that exported 3D scene. We have no words for those who unconsciously call these artefacts and files 3D when widely used. However, those who strongly argue that these are 3D artefacts are absolutely fraudulent, or they know nothing.

Some screenshots of 3D rendering

To some, the images in this image are 3D. But these are not actual 3D. They are only 2D images taken from 3D scenes.

  • You cannot resize any object here or examine it by rotating it around any angle horizontally, vertically or diagonally.
  • You cannot place the images here in another 3D scene or use them in a 3D scene.

These can be a background image in a 3D scene or a promotional brochure at most. So they are not actual 3D.

Ultimately, there is no difference between 2D and Fake 3D assets. Although the ways of creation differ, the purposes and places of use are exactly the same.

The Real 3D

Your creativity is unlimited if you only have one real 3D object or asset. Depending on your imagination, you can create as many different unique 3D versions or artefacts as you wish. You can place those unique 3D assets or artefacts in your environment. So, you can also create some other new and fascinating, unique 3D scenes. As you noticed, the limit is limitless. Now we have endless possibilities.

This image is a 2D screenshot taken from a 3D/XR scene. Our Sister project is taken from a character used in the Rage Of Titans game.

Rage Of Titans Robo Soldier video taken from 3D/XR scene

The video is taken from another version of this character’s 3D/XR scene. But this video is not 3D either.

Let’s raise the bet with the two videos below.

When you watch these videos, you see that a 3D robot created for the virtual game world has been transferred to the real world with AR technologies. In other words, a virtual object is placed in the real world and can be viewed in the real world.

You can reach the real 3D scene of the 3D character in the videos from the link below. You must use the mobile device for the Augmented Reality features.

So how about increasing the stakes more and more?

When you have a high-quality real 3D asset or model and a technology or engine family that is sufficiently advanced enough to process it, the results you will get will be as in the image above. Fascinating & Photorealistic!

Let’s examine the image above from right to left.

  1. The Astronaut is placed under a red sky in the virtual world. The helmet reflects the red sky.
  2. The Astronaut is placed in front of a plaza in the real world, under a blue sky. The helmet reflects the blue sky.
  3. The Astronaut is placed under a grey ceiling in a real-world cafe. The helmet reflects the grey environment and items.
  4. The Astronaut is placed on a laptop in a real-world room. The helmet reflects the room’s ambience, window, and light exactly.

The Magic

If you have high-quality 3D assets and sufficiently advanced technology, the thing you create is called magic.

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” Arthur C. Clarke

If you want to experience the magic in the image above, you can open the link below and try the real 3D scene. You must use a mobile device for the Augmented Reality experiences.

  1. After the scene is downloaded and opened, you will see the red sky reflections on the helmet.
  2. When you press the AR button on the top right and place it anywhere in the home, cafe, or office, you will see that the light and reflections on the helmet come from the light and objects in your environment.

This is where the limitlessness of 3D comes from. When you design a high-quality 3D model and you have sufficiently advanced technology, your creativity suddenly becomes limitless and unique. What you create turns from a technological artefact to magic within endless possibilities.
