Developing A Process

Building A Business That Scales

When starting a business, there will come a point where you simply cannot do all of the work yourself. You’ve taken on too many clients, too many jobs and work way too many hours. At this point you have to decide to keep operating this way and hit a ceiling, or begin growing your business by taking on employees and delegating the work.

You can only do as much as you can do. But a process, that someone can follow, can do work while you focus on growing and maintaining your business. It allows you to take on even more work and increase your revenue.

How do you find other people that can do the same work that you do? After all, you’re the best person for the job. How can someone fill your shoes? That’s where a well defined written process for everything in your business is key.

A well defined process doesn’t have to be completely rigid, specific or limiting. It allows someone else to do work for you while knowing full well that the work they are doing will meet your expectations and goals for the company.

You don’t have a process unless it is written down

This quote is vital as Thrown begins growing out of it’s infancy. Even though the clients aren’t lined up at the door, it’s so important that when they do there is a process in place to manage that.

Everything should be documented, from the way design templates are made to the way money is handled. It should be written in a way that allows anyone to step into the role and begin contributing immediately without much training.

A lack of a process should never keep you from growing or taking on new challenges, but when a process is in place it gives you the confidence to know that you can get the job done and exceed their expectations.

In order to push out quality, consistent content and services, a system that allows for good communication between employees needs to exist. Information should be in a central location that is readily accessible to all so operations can run smoother much more of the time.

To scale even further, a process for hiring employees needs to be made so that you aren’t necessary to the discussion. Having this level of scale allows your business to grow constantly, and exactly the way you intend it to.

Thrown is a business that will grow far beyond me (Jordan). It’s core products and income will change over time, but the intention of building a company that scales will remain.
