In 2019 we learned that the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) had been funding and arming paramilitary groups throughout the global South. These militias, ostensibly created in an effort to stop poaching have, among other things, killed and tortured Indigenous people. We as leftists rightly recoil from these acts of racist and imperialist violence, but the conservation movement has in many ways been built on the dispossession and death of Indigenous peoples. This recent expose reveals only the most blatant modern form of an older racist, colonialist understanding of humanity’s role in the natural world.

The notion that humans, especially Indigenous…

“Defund the police", "abolish the police". These are the words on the lips of the protestors who have put their health and safety on the line in streets all across this country, and around the world, in the wake of the police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
To many, including folks sympathetic toward the Movement for Black Lives, these demands seem sudden and extreme. "Certainly," many are saying, "there is an issue with racism and violence among the police of this country, and I agree we need reform, but defund? Abolish?? Why jump to the most extreme option…

The neoliberal world could only exist as long as we believed in it, coronavirus has shattered that belief.

The agriscience company I work for has been open a little over a year. I’ve been there about 7 months working in the greenhouse & it’s maybe the best job I’ve ever worked. I love caring for plants and I quickly became close with a lot of my coworkers. I have a better benefits package than when I was getting a salary and working behind a desk. A lot of that is the now-stereotypical start up attitude. Hemp & the CBD products we make from it only became nationally legal in 2017 and the prospects for growth in the industry…

"Excuse me, Mr. Biden, how much money did you make in Ukraine with your son?" That was the question posed to Joe Biden at a rally in Milford, NH, at the end of 2019. Others from the audience joined in. One woman, who cleverly referred to the former VP as "quid pro Joe", added "The truth is going to come out, buddy".

Joe’s response to such inquiries, into his son Hunter’s job at the Ukrainian natural gas company Burisma, during the time Joe was Vice President, has become typical. He is outraged that anyone could even think there is something…

Sorry to Bother You, the new film by activist-and-rapper-turned-filmmaker Boots Riley is the first truly anti-capitalist film to be made in mainstream American cinema in my lifetime. I say truly anticapitalist because it is so both in content and in form.

The film centers around the young working-class Cassius Green (Lakeith Stanfield). Green’s situation is familiar to any millennial, he lives in his uncle’s (Terry Crews) garage with his girlfriend Detroit (Tessa Thompson) and must prostrate himself in front of hiring officers for low-wage work to pay his rent. While at his new job at the call center Regalview…

There will be no future on a dead planet, socialist or otherwise. If the left is to seize power and bring our planet into the rational egalitarian age we envision, we will need to simultaneously tackle a host of environmental crises. Failure to do so will mean that our project is doomed from the onset. Even the most firmly grounded socialist society will not survive ecological collapse, throwing the planet and its people back into the barbarism we are working so hard to overcome. Or worse.

At this point many readers, whom I assume are at least moderately progressive and…

Oregon State University and HP have a decades long history of collaboration. According to HP’s then-CEO John Young, a big factor in the opening of the HP facility in Corvallis in the 1970s was to facilitate a relationship with the University. On the special page devoted to HP on OSU’s website, the University boasts that “forty years later, the relationship is still flourishing”. Nearly half of the employees hired at the Corvallis facility are graduates from OSU, including many high-ranking officers within the corporation. HP partners with the University on research, and donates both funds and resources to the school.

The primary elections that took place this week were not a harbinger of good things to come for the Democratic party, nor a source of hope for those counting on a wave of progressives, or a “Political Revolution”, sweeping the 2018 congressional elections. In both Ohio and West Virginia, progressive candidates lost handily to Democratic Party insiders.

In Ohio, Dennis Kucinich, who ran for president ten years ago on a platform to the left of today’s Democrats, and who championed union rights, public broadband, single-payer and state seizure of fracking sites in his current run, lost by almost 40 points…

By now everyone is familiar with the information released by former interim chair of the DNC, and current chair of the Rules Committee, Donna Brazile, in her article in Politico on Thursday. Hillary Clinton and her primary campaign, having helped lift the DNC out of the insolvency it faced after the reign of Debbie Wasserman-Shultz and President Obama, basically took over. The words Brazile uses (attributing them to Gary Gensler, Hillary’s Campaign’s CFO) are “He described the party as fully under the control of Hillary’s campaign”

This arrangement was made in August 2015, long before any primary votes had been…
