So let’s talk thirteen. After a year of waiting we have finally made it to the premiere. But what are we the fans thinking about it. It’s back and forth with many fans and some question whether they want to continue on while others like myself look forward to each Thursday as a new episode is released. Even though I am angry that as always, Supernatural managed to kill three of my favorite characters in in the two finales of season twelve, I still love watching. Whatever other fans are saying, I believe the first episode of the season was great because it gives the fans new scenarios to react to while giving us more of the characters we know and love.
In an 2017 article written by Kevin Yeoman called “Supernatural Season 13: Are Sam and Dean Raising Lucifer Jr.?” he discussed the premiere and what he thought about it. He begins with discussing the plot and at the end he says his final thoughts which are “In all, for a show that’s been around the block a dozen times, Supernatural still manages to entertain”(Yeoman). I agree with his statement most people would think that a show that has 12 past seasons would get repetitive but Supernatural, while it still holds some aspects that we are used to, still manages to keep us watching and waiting for the next episode. The premier “Lost and Found” introduced us to Jack and gave us the start of a new storyline to look forward too. As always we got Sam and Dean arguing what to do with Jack as well as a brand new villain the fourth Knight of Hell, Asmodeus. All of these things made this episode good and made me look forward to the future of season thirteen.
With a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 86% on viewer ratings it is easy to say that most fans enjoyed the first episode, however one Rotten Tomatoes review someone said, “I love this show, but I am so disappointed with the first episode of season 13, it sucked! I really hope it gets better.” Although the fan didn’t state exactly why they didn’t like the episode I would disagree with them. This episode gave us more of the emotions that we have seen throughout the show and it also filled in the missing parts of the finale of season twelve. This episode helped introduce Jack and who he is and any episode that explains the questions I asking will always be considered a good episode.
Though very little fans disliked the episode and most only discussed how they liked it there are some who had some complains about the episode. Katey Stoetzel discusses her point of view in the review “Supernatural 13×01 Review: “Lost and Found.”” In this review Stoetzel discusses different aspect of the episode and what she liked and disliked within the episode. Stoetzel says,
I didn’t quite get the point of the reveal of Dean praying to God/Chuck — if that scene had been placed while Sam was inside the fast food restaurant, it might have played better.
I disagree with this statement it adds a sense of confusion which makes sense. We don’t really know what Dean is thinking and having this scene shown closer to the end of the episode creates more space between us and him which adds to the episode. It takes us out of our comfort zone of always knowing what’s going on with the boys, and gives us a new outlook on the characters which really adds to the episode.
Overall most fans really enjoyed the premiere of season 13. In the article “Supernatural Season 13 Premiere Review: Some Are “Lost”, Others Are “Found”” Nick Hogan discussed what he thought about the episode. Hogan says “Discovering Jack has virtually unlimited power while running from the angels made for an exciting one-off story, and set up an interesting premise going forward” Hogan then goes on to discuss how Sam and Dean will have to become parents and raise Jack (Hogan). Even though Jack isn’t truly a child it will be interesting to see how Sam and Dean take on this challenge. Supernatural always manages to put the characters into new positions that we have never seen them in before this is what keeps fan watching. It is interesting to see the characters in new positions and this aspect added to “Lost and Found” being a good episode.
When it comes to new season Supernatural has never let me down I continue to watch because it continues to deliver. This episode is no different. The are no parts within the episode that I truly disliked and I thought overall it was one of the best season premiers Supernatural has had. This series may not be everyone’s cup of tea it is a great show with great storylines and as long as they make new season I will always continue to watch it.
