Design to Do Good

Because at the end of the day, it’s the projects that serve a greater purpose that bring you the most satisfaction.

Since learning to design and code, I’ve had hundreds of ideas cross my mind. I’ve also heard a hundred more—some better than others. But a few weeks ago, a good friend of mine and I were brainstorming ideas for our next project. We came up with several ideas, most of which required too much time or too many resources beyond our own reach. So we decided to come up with something that would be fun to work on, would not require too much time or resources, and ultimately would serve a greater purpose.

Stumbling Blocks

Somehow we started talking about the Church and then missionary work and then BOOM! Just like that, we came up with our idea—divine inspiration? Maybe. I asked Colton, “what if we built a site that helped members become better member missionaries?” Colton responded, “have you seen Elder Bednar’s recent talk on sharing the gospel using social media?” I had not watched it at the time but I thought, what a genius idea! What better way to share the gospel with others than online? Sharing the gospel using social media is what members are already doing, so why not make a site that makes it easier for members to search for and share messages about the gospel?

We took it one step further. Instead of messages, we decided to do photo messages, which you’ve probably seen on your news feed before. We found that there wasn’t a single source where these photo messages were being generated. Instead, individuals are creating photo messages here and there and sharing them on their social media accounts. We want all members of our LDS community to have a source where they’d be able to access our database of photo messages they can share directly on their social media accounts.

The Digital Missionary

Think digital pass-along cards being shared by digital missionaries. We want all LDS members to be not only member missionaries but “digital missionaries”—one who shares the gospel of Jesus Christ online. We think what we have come up with is just one of many ways to do this. And we hope you will join us in our mission to share the gospel through positive messages.

Sweep the Earth

Sweep the Earth is a web application that holds photo messages that can be searched for by keyword, author, category, or hashtag, and then shared directly to social media. Our photo messages are strictly LDS-related messages that are double-checked for source validity. Right now we have hundreds of photo messages in the queue to be designed (so if you’re interested in helping a brother out, let me know☺). We also plan to build tools that will enable our users to create the photo messages themselves (version 2).

Here are a few examples of our positive messages:

“Without hard work, nothing grows but weeds.” — Gordon B. Hinckley
“Stop seeking out the storms and enjoy more fully the sunlight.” — Gordon B. Hinckly
“Faith is the antidote for fear.” — Russell M. Nelson
“We truly need Him every hour, whether they be hours of sunshine or of rain.” — Thomas S. Monson

Fill the Earth with Goodness

Through this process, I’ve learned that good design makes a difference but designing for good makes the difference.
