The sentence highlighted was written to encapsulate the Black American struggle to achieve rights to the protections of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” alluded to in the Declaration of Independence. Analyzing America’s history (some would argue present), we must consider whether our country truly offers each and every citizen equal protections. I would consider this sentence an instance of realization rather than victimization. A realization of how crucial periods and practices in American history (i.e. War on Drugs, Redlining, Mass Incarceration) have negatively impacted Black Americans to this very day. The lingering effects of this history continue to limit Black Americans from fully participating and enjoying the freedom of American society.
