A few things (and as a boxing purist I’m not watching this fight either, so it’s not like I’m rationalizing):

  1. I find it hard to believe that as a lifelong fight fan who would’ve seen fighters get hurt or killed, entire fight promotions built on ethnic pride (any fight in the Mexico-Puerto Rico rivalry for example), and a literal race riot after Andrew Golota punched Riddick Bowe in the dick for the 17th time, you would now be turned off by a few racial and homophobic remarks on a press tour.
  2. Mayweather, McGregor, and everyone else involved aren’t creating the kind of human sentiments that, in their ugliest form, look like bigotry, hate, and xenophobia, they’re just making money off of them. It may not be the most honorable route to a dollar, but there are a lot of organizations/industries cashing in our most base tendencies. Is it fair to single out the parties making money from this fight?
  3. Lighten up, dude. I know Charlottesville has us all on high moralism alert with anything pertaining to race, but a week from now after everyone’s written their last regret tweet about buying into the Mayweather-McGregor hype, no one’s going to remember anything said or done in the lead-up to this farce. Just watch the black guy and the Irishman try to beat each other up if you really want to.

Sorry for skewering.
