How to Travel Tibet
Tourism in Tibet is highly restricted and travelers traveling independently are not allowed. In order to obtain a Tibet Tourism Bureau (TTB) permit, foreign travelers need to prearrange a tour. Only Hongkong, Chinese, and Taiwanese travelers can enter freely without a visa.
You won’t even be able to board a train or flight to Tibet without a TTB permit. Except for Singapore, Brunei, and Japan citizens, all other visitors are required to have a valid Chinese visa in addition to a TTB. Make sure to collect your Chinese visa at least a month before your trip, as the tour operator will be requiring it to get the TTB permit.
When to Travel Tibet
Tibet can be visited all year round — but the best time to visit is in summer and spring (from April to October) when most areas of Tibet are accessible and the weather is not too harsh. This also largely depends on your Tibet itinerary as certain parts can only be visited in summer.
Also, most Tibetan festivals take place during this time of the year, including the month-long Saga Dawa Festival, the week-long Shoton, and Nagqu horse racing festival. Winter is mostly avoided by the travelers for paying a visit to Tibet, as temperatures at such high altitudes can get quite extreme.
How to Get to Tibet
Flights to Tibet are quite pricey, and a lot of people suffer from altitude sickness when flying straight into Lhasa. You will have to fly via other cities in China or Kathmandu to get to Lhasa regardless of where you’re coming from.
How to Get Around Tibet
Foreign visitors are not allowed to avail any means of public transport in Tibet. As mentioned, you need to arrange a tour in order to enter Tibet and move around the region. And tours always include transportation that will bring you around Tibet.
However, travelers are free to explore Lhasa’s markets, squares and old town on their own. You only need to be accompanied by a tour guide when visiting tourist attractions (any monastery and temple).
