Tibz 25 — Part 03: Why Charity Water
We’re closing in on my birthday (February 9th, next Tuesday.) At the time of writing, we’ve already reached $115 in donations and I couldn’t be more grateful! But that also leaves us to work towards the goal of $2500 and I need YOUR help!
As I try to raise awareness about the campaign and collect donations from my friends and family, I was asked if there was a reason for me specifically choosing Charity Water over other organizations. For me, I guess it boils down to the story around Charity Water.
The Story
A few years ago, I discovered the story of an individual (and organization) that had a profound impact on me.
Scott Harrison was a successful and vain club promoter in New York City. However, there came a point in his life when he realized that his materialist life wasn’t going anywhere and after some soul-searching, he decided to use his skills to move on from a self-centered existence and try to help other people.
In 2004, he went to Liberia as a photojournalist and discovered the effects that contaminated water had on the local population. Shocked by his experience on the ground, he decided to found Charity Water in 2006.
This is only a very short summary, and you can learn more about his experience in this video from Kevin Rose’s “Foundation” series
Transparency
One of the biggest problems when giving to charity is the costs associated with running a not-for-profit organisation.
For every dollar that is raised for the cause, it’s very hard to tell how much is used to support the organisation and how much is really used to help those in needs.
Luckily the people running Charity Water rely on private investors to support the company, and as such, they are able to allocate 100% of the funds raised in charity campaigns to the water projects. You can learn more by following this link on their website.
I hope this inspires you as much as it motivated me to try and make a difference, every year. I’d be happy to answer any other question you may have about the campaign so feel free to write a response below or get in touch with me directly!
In the meantime, if you haven’t had the chance to participate until now, now’s the chance!
With your help and donations, we can save lives together!
How you can help
Donating to my campaign
The best way to help is also the simplest: to achieve my goal of raising $2500, I need donations. So if you’d like to help, please donate to my campaign here: http://bit.ly/tibz25
Share the word
Another simple way to help out is just to share this campaign with the people around you, whether it’s a post on your favourite social networks (I’m at @iTibz on Twitter by the way), or you can also talk about it with your friends, family or co-workers! For example, use this link to send a tweet, or share it with your Facebook friends: it helps spread the word!
For now, I’d like to sincerely thank you for taking the time to read all the way down here. The next post will go out on Tuesday for my 25th birthday! (Can you tell I’m excited?!)
