I’ve always drafted, sometimes obsessively, which makes me more naturally a columnist than a reporter (though I’ve never been full-time either). What I’ve learned in trying to write a book has blown all of that away though. The degree of required coordination, planning, thought and rethought is about five orders of magnitude bigger, to the point that I now understand why writers are all a little bit crazy.
