I work at a tech startup building privacy tools for average people, and in my personal experience the precursor to adoption of any privacy solution is education. The average reader doesn’t yet understand how their activity is analyzed and monitized. Likewise, most journalists probably don’t grasp the full extent of the tracking ecosystem behind the platforms they write for. Neither is to blame, both the technical mechanisms and the economic underpinnings of online tracking are incredibly complex. But people need to know this affects them in order to push for change.
