It’s taken me decades to prepare to internalize the truth about my nation’s racist history — the American Nightmare. I consider myself an optimistic, joy-filled person who loves and respects all people. I’ve had to do a lot of deep introspective work to arrive at a place where I am finally able to take in the reality of the transatlantic slave trade and the unseemly foundations of American society.
