Preparing for Hay Fever Season

If you are unlucky enough to get hay fever then you know when it’s coming. Every year! It’s no surprise. And every year its just as bad as the year before.

Any holistic practitioner can tell you, it’s always better to stop the symptoms before they begin. Prevention is much better than a cure!

This takes planning. Maybe trying some acupuncture or acupressure before the hay fever season starts will get you in energetic shape to fight off the pollen when it appears. The idea is to boost your immune system and get the body ready for battle!

The Liver often needs help after winter, as spring starts to make an appearance. We would want to check the Spleen, the Lung and the Kidneys to make sure everything is happy and in balance for the coming onslaught.

All these organs need to be in top condition for the immune system to work as efficiently as possible. In addition to acupuncture or acupressure, take some time before spring to plan lifestyle changes that can really help fight hay fever. For example, ginger is a natural antihistamine and decongestant which can be very helpful.

Foods rich in Beta-Carotene such as sweet potatoes, Kale and carrots boost Vitamin A and supports the respiratory system and also the immune system.

Thinking about simple changes to routines can help enormously. Try washing your hair before you go to bed. In the pollen season your hair collects significant amounts of pollen and then you sleep in it! If washing your hair every night feels like a burden, or would dry your hair out then try wearing a hat when you go out. Little fixes like this can make a huge difference.

In the UK, tree pollen starts in late March and finishes in middle of May. Grass pollen plagues us from the middle of May to July, and weed pollen from the end of June to September.

Try and get prepared early to protect yourself from the pollen fairies!
