The Next Generation of Wireless — “5G” — Is All Hype.

Does 5G come with fries?

No flying cars this year, wait 'till next year, boyeee.

Wireless fiber! So… existing cables plus wifi 802.11 backing it up? Google bought up the spectrum the FCC converted from analog TV, and is converting their high-speed offering to wireless? Is this related?

I also see the FCC lost the municipality case, overstepping their mandate, that’s only tangentially related, right? Because with the amount of video data going over cellular, while it was the ISP’s who won (and AT&T is both and subsidizes Apple products) certainly the cellular carriers are the real beneficiaries. Cheap muni for video streaming if deployed as a utility would presumably change consumer behavior?

But the next front appears to be video news, built by bots, algos, big data analytics and consumer preference feedback all served up as a service, monthly fee, from the cloud. Which will, if it goes that way, be on an exponentially speeded-up trajectory, given AI chips (second gen designing themselves), pressure from tronc, TMZ, the Kardashians and our seemingly insatiable need for updates?

So how does the hype around 5G relate to the FCC, big cable, wifi, McD’s rebranding as health food and removing porn from their wifi, the GOP branding porn a health crisis, doing nothing on zika or guns, AT&T’s relationship with Apple, Apple’s move into TV, net neutrality and Netflix and and and….

People are going to overpay for 5G, they’ll get newer hardware with more RAM which will help them catch their Pokemon in their Uber on their way to their airbnb, and prolly be happy to do it. Because people.
