Loyalties

Being a New York sports fan is an interesting concept. You knew two types of people: Mets/Jets or Yankees/Giants. Sure there were the odd Mets/Giants or Yankees/Jets (my good college friend Jimmy is one such individual) fan, but usually it was Yankees vs. Mets. Giants vs. Jets. Old vs. new. But tonight, I find myself in the unusual position of cheering for Jacob deGrom and the Mets.

I grew up listening to WFAN. Some of my earliest memories are sitting in the car listening to their (now-defunct) jingle. More memorable still, was Mike & The Mad Dog, still the zenith of sports talk radio (sorry Mike & Mike). Before I knew it, I was hooked. I listened to WFAN from the time I got home from school until I went to bad. My hand me down radio it also meant that often, I ended up listening to the Mets.

I know some Yankee fans who wouldn’t dream of rooting for the Mets to do well. They like having the recent success, the prestige, the “Yankee magic” to hold over the heads of Mets fans. To me that’s petty and simple-minded. This is one Yankees fan who won’t be rooting against another New York team. Tonight, we’re all Mets fans. #LGM
