Context to explain where I’m coming from: last year I started a small organic farm business and tried to make a full-time living at it. And broke even. Based on my research, I’m lucky to have broke-even in Year One. This has made me a *lot* more sympathetic to all kinds of farms and farmers — even the ones which I maybe previously thought were kind of “evil.” Now I know it’s not so black and white. I’ve spoken with other farm researchers who say that the majority of farms in the US operate at a loss year after year and their “big plan” is to sell the farm when they retire. The system is completely broken top to bottom.
