I don’t think it’s true you have to go through some kind of B.S. like “suffering” routine to be authentic and real as a writer or a human. How much of that striving is false and egocentric anyway? You just have to burn the flame and keep it lit. That’s enough challenge on it’s own. “Even the easy way is hard enough.”
