American history is rich with examples of public figures getting booed offstage, it’s hardly a new phenomenon. The dirty little secret is that it’s usually by design. MY’s book sales went through the roof after Berkely. It’s really just show biz, after all. That said, I don’t see a lot of liberal public figures trying to get up on stage at say, Regent or Liberty University and tell a bunch of Christian Conservatives what they think of them, but I guess this is the hill some dittoheads have decided they want to try to die on. I honestly don’t get the point but more power to them if the money is green and folds. Conservatives seem to have a lot of trouble grasping the simple truth that good comedy punches up, not down. Perhaps that is intentional as well. I must say I don’t really agree with people using physical violence to prevent or stop a performance, but I think everything else is fair game. It’s the ultimate expression of real-time democracy. Public figures establish a certain reputation and say intentionally offensive stuff and their audience lets them know they are offended by it. You either kill it or you get killed. It’s the system working exactly as it was designed. It’s raw and sometimes ugly and admittedly imperfect, but it’s way better than any alternative I can think of.
