Sometimes firefighters intentionally flood and destroy one house to save several neighboring houses. It’s a calculation based on relative harm, not absolute harm. Our war for independence was based on this calculation, as were most worthy endeavors throughout history. If we only took into account absolute harm we would never do anything. Also, an acre of trash is much easier to remove than an acre of oil so false equivalency.
