I think the most important thing to realize is that you have to go out and take advantage of the opportunities that are available to make your degree worth it. You can’t just spend all your time in the classroom and having fun, you have to go out and do internships/get involved in student organizations/apply for fellowships/do research/volunteer etc. Those things will help you learn the real-world skills that will complement what you are learning in the classroom, make you more attractive to employers and make you a more interesting person overall. In college, you have lots of time and resources to do cool things, like study abroad, and responsible things, like talking to a career counselor or having a work-study job, but you have to go out and pursue them; they won’t come to you and once you graduate, they’re mostly gone. And you should do a mix of cool things and responsible things, not too much of one or the other.
As a girl who will be starting college this fall (nine days until I move in!!)
