That’s funny, I’m planning to go to an academic conference in Nov. and I’m definitely thinking of it as a vacation. However, I have good reasons: 1) it’ll feel like a vacation after three months of med school 2) I’m a nerd 3) it’s in a cool city and 4) I’ll get to reunite with colleagues/coworkers from old job and 5) I can hopefully get it paid for. But I can totally see how under normal circumstances (and especially for non-academics) conferences do NOT equal vacation.
