Barbara Rocha, the voice coach I interviewed for the piece, had several thoughts about Trump’s speaking style. Mostly, that he doesn’t do any kind of “listening”: He just wants to tell you what he wants to tell you.

Here’s one quote from Rocha that stuck with me:

“When Trump pauses, it’s like, ‘I think that sounded good. I’m going to say that again, and aren’t I clever?’ … Trump speaks to people who agree with him, for the most part. That’s who he likes in his audience: people who agree with him. So, it’s easier for him to bask in that, and he wants them to agree with him.”
