Finding your way with film

Or doing it on your own

I’ve recently been writing a movie script for a film I want to make. I’ve noticed that doing it on your own is different than the way a studio would make it. But a studio film starts with the writer and so do you. Independent film has never been more alive and now is the time to start if you want to go that way.

Doing it on your own is incredibly freeing and gives you the power to create what you want the way you want it done.

At the end of the day a movie is about script script script. A great movie requires a great script. And the only way to get there is to write write write.

Thankfully, words are free and computers are plentiful. No one can teach you how to write ( though they can teach you the principles). You can only learn to write by doing it, so start today!

Doing film will transform your life

So why do you want to create a film? Is it for the money or is it for the fun? I garuntee you will not make any money for your first film so why do you do it? Because it’s beautiful. Because there’s a story within you that must find expression. Because you love the art. Your life will be transformed by film.

People will pay you for this

People will pay you for your contribution to society. Even the greatest artists started as nobody’s who no one wanted to pay for their work. Read this article on Van Gogh. Even Davinci was a nobody to start with. But ten years from now people will pay you for your feature film. Fifty years from now they will celebrate your classic Avatar or Intersteller. Filmmaking is largely autotelic (autotelic means done for the joy of doing it).

The long way around

If you’re considering a career in filmmaking then you need to think long term. Filmmaking will consume your life if you go this route. Everyone’s journey is different but if you go this route there are rich rewards. If you go the route of doing it on your own you will find joy and happiness in a world of possibilities.
