As an American-Filipino, my love for Filipino food runs deep. Growing up, I learned to cook traditional dishes from my mother, who passed on her knowledge of Filipino cuisine with pride. One of my absolute favorites to prepare and enjoy is the Filipino egg roll, known as lumpia.

History of Lumpia

Lumpia has a rich history in Filipino cuisine, influenced by Chinese cooking techniques brought over centuries ago. It’s a popular dish in Filipino gatherings, often served as an appetizer or a snack. What makes Filipino lumpia unique is its thinner wrapper and its variety of fillings, ranging from savory meats to vegetables, all seasoned with a blend of local spices.

Recipe: Filipino Egg Rolls (Lumpia)

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground pork or chicken
  • 1 cup shredded cabbage
  • 1 cup shredded carrots
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Lumpia wrappers (spring roll wrappers)
  • Cooking oil for frying

Instructions:

Prepare the Filling:

In a large skillet or pan, heat some oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and chopped onions, sauté until fragrant.

  • Add ground pork or chicken, breaking it up with a spatula. Cook until browned.
  • Stir in shredded cabbage and carrots. Cook until vegetables are tender.
  • Season with soy sauce, salt, and pepper to taste. Remove from heat and let cool.

Assemble the Lumpia:

Lay out a lumpia wrapper on a clean surface. Spoon about 2–3 tablespoons of the filling onto the wrapper in a line, leaving some space at the edges.

  • Fold the sides of the wrapper over the filling, then roll tightly from bottom to top, sealing the edge with a bit of water.

Frying:

In a deep skillet or pot, heat oil over medium-high heat (enough to submerge the lumpia).

  • Carefully place the rolled lumpia into the hot oil, seam side down. Fry in batches until golden brown and crispy, turning occasionally for even cooking.
  • Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.

Serve and Enjoy:

Serve hot with sweet chili sauce, banana ketchup, or vinegar dipping sauce on the side.

Conclusion

Cooking Filipino egg rolls not only connects me to my cultural heritage but also allows me to share delicious flavors with friends and family. The process of making lumpia is not just about the food; it’s about preserving traditions and creating memories. I hope you try making lumpia yourself and experience the joy of Filipino cooking firsthand!
