I think you are half right. “Natural selection and survival of the fittest does very much still apply it is just that at the moment we happen to be the fittest,” natural selection is not selecting for the fittest, it is selecting for extinction.

There have been many evolutionary dead ends and niche survivors.

If natural selection lets us survive at the expense of all other life except what we can somehow protect it does not mean that is the best outcome.
