The broken social contract.

I am not denying that the contract is broken but I don’t think we agree on what was the contract.

As an American I will discuss this mostly in an American Context.

The Federal Government’s Social Contract with Americans.

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

Justice, Welfare and Liberty. Considering to arc of history we have on the longer term done pretty well on Justice and Welfare. Much injustice that was common at the time of the founding of this country has been made illegal and in practical ways have shown improvements. Welfare in particular general Welfare is much improved and in particular it has been most greatly improved for minorities and women. Social Justice demands that this progress does not stop just because progress has been made but the demands for functional equality in anything less than a much longer term denies the practical reality of what is possible. Liberty is being eroded while progress on Justice and Welfare was being made. We face ever greater restrictions, fees, taxes, levies, prohibitions, intrusions, spying, etc. from the Federal Government. Do you fear that if the Federal Government stopped spying, reduced taxes, rolled back regulation, increased individual Liberty that it would have a negative impact on Justice and general Welfare. Does not the spying, taxes, and regulation negatively impact Justice and Welfare.

Yes and No. Done right the balance could be toward the positive but because of a concern for Federal Overreach the powers of the Federal Government are limited. The Federal Government has not broken the contract by doing too little but by doing too much. So, who is not doing enough to fulfill this social contract. The States, they are not doing enough and the people are not doing enough.

Stop calling on the Federal Government to “Fix” things. Get your State and its rich elites to “Fix” things and make a positive or negative example for other States. It should matter more to you, who is your Governor than who is your President.
