You are of course right in what you say but that does not make Gold Mining and Bitcoin mining good things.
Jewelry and other investments consume more than 80 percent of annual production gold. With about 54,000 tons in national reserves and who knows how much held by individuals that is enough for 90 years of industrial production even if not a single ounce gets recycled. We mostly dig gold out of the ground to put it into vaults and jewelry boxes. I don’t claim to know how a workable curb on gold mining could be implemented but done right it would be a good thing. Maybe fix the price, confiscate it all and ban mining and only let it be sold to legitimate industries. Know doubt this would create a huge black market so yeah, not really workable. Too bad people won’t do the right thing just because it is the right thing to do.
Same deal with Crypto can’t really ban them so just like with gold mines the polluting will continue because it makes someone, lots of someones, rich.
