It’s been a while since I’ve first read this post.
You and your brother remind me of the hymn writer who wrote the hymn “Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus”.
“Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to take Him at His Word;
Just to rest upon His promise,
And to know, “Thus says the Lord!”
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust Him more!

Louisa M. R. Stead.
In grace and holiness, some of the most impactful hymnwriters and their names are forgotten, but the Lord never forgets and is not slow in fulfilling His promise.
One day, your faithfulness and perseverance in this time of trial will be remembered. “For the righteous will never be moved; he (she) will be remembered forever. He (she) is not afraid of bad news; his (her) heart is firm, trusting in the Lord.” — Psalm 112:6–7
I hope you are recovering well and have been mourning in comfort (Matt 5:4). I’ve experienced a personal loss of my own in the recent weeks after reading your post — a friend, a pop star named Christina Grimmie. She died in Orlando a few weeks ago, the same weeks the shootings happened.
I often think about what happened and there is really nothing to do but lift beseeching hands and cry “Lord, have your way in me.”
“I give you my heart, my soul, and I will live for You alone.”
I just wanted to leave you with this bible passages, of which I am sure you are well familiar with.
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
Lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways submit to Him,
And He will make your paths straight.
Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the LORD and shun evil.
This will bring health to your body
And nourishment to your bones.”
“But he was pierced for our trangressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The punishment that brought us peace was on him,
And by his wounds we are healed.”
Your father would be proud of the legacy He’s left behind through Him in Christ Jesus :)
To him, never forget that you were, you are, and you will always be his greatest treasure.
To answer your question, I think the words are simple, but not so simple.
“I love you and forgive you, because He first loved and forgave me.”
That’s what I would try to say to shooter of Christina Grimmie. That’s what I would try to say to group of 4 who mugged me inches outside my apartment in Urbana-Champaign, where I attended school.
Will be praying for you and your family in this time of healing.
