Hmm, I see your point; and I guess that I painted with a bit of a broad brush and that certain nuances fell off in the ‘programmatic’ tone of the text.
What I think Adorno means with suffering is (a) bodily suffering that is imposed by others by treating the victims as things/animals and (b) metaphysical suffering that stems from living in a world without ‘objective’ sense. These two don’t necessarily and intuitively go together but it’s clear if you read the Meditations that both levels are intertwined for Adorno.
I wonder though, when you say “ones own suffering”, if you mean “suffering ‘through’ something to attain a goal” (simple example: Falling a lot while learning how to skateboard) or if you really mean suffering and trying to make sense of it. …Even though, now that I’m thinking about it, that’s an interesting question in relation to your piece, especially to the Socratic doxa as a means of sense-making. I’m scratching my head haha.
