Today I’m launching Opener 1.7, the latest and greatest update to the handy link opening utility for iOS. This update includes one oft-requested feature and some solid refinements.

Quick browser switching

Since the introduction of browser support in Opener 1.1 I’ve received repeated feedback that browser switching isn’t discoverable, and that for people who use multiple browsers it’s too hard to switch. With Opener 1.7 I’m changing that with what I’m calling “quick browser switching.” There’s now a caret button on the browser row that, when tapped, expands the list of available browsers right inline.

Tapping a browser closes the menu and launches it right away.

This brings the number of taps to switch browsers from 3 to 2, and makes it so that you don’t have to enter another whole menu to switch. I’ve also changed the icon for this menu to be a bit clearer.

If you’re a keyboard-savvy iPad user, you can also now switch browsers using just the keyboard. Pressing ⇧⌘, will open the browser menu and pressing ⌘0–9 will launch the browser of your choice.

You can hold the ⌘ key to see the complete list of supported keyboard shortcuts at any time.

Refinements

This update also includes a bunch of nice improvements.

  • The action extension will now load up to 250ms faster, and lists of actions sorted by app install state are now sorted faster.
  • I fixed a crash in the intro flow of users running versions of iOS prior to 10.3.
  • I fixed a longstanding bug causing the list of apps Opener supports to sometimes not update as fast as it should when the app and action extension are running at the same time.

With all of these enhancements, Opener 1.7 makes for a nice stocking stuffer this holiday season!
