There are some pretty terrible definitions of Grindhouse out there. I like this one the best from what I’ve seen so far. If any Film Professors or students out there want to give me a better one, please let me know in the responses.

“Grindhouse is a term that refers to a genre of low-budget films that are typically violent, exploitative, or bizarre. The term comes from the name of the theaters that would show these films, often in double or triple features, for a low admission fee. These theaters were mostly located in urban areas, especially in New York City’s 42nd Street, and were known for their poor quality and sleazy atmosphere

Grindhouse films were influenced by various genres, such as horror, splatter, action, martial arts, blaxploitation, spaghetti westerns, and sexploitation. They often featured graphic scenes of gore, nudity, sex, and violence, as well as campy dialogue, cheesy special effects, and plot holes. Some of the most famous grindhouse filmmakers include Roger Corman, Russ Meyer, Herschell Gordon Lewis, Lucio Fulci, and George A. Romero13”- Bing Definition.

My first exposure to the genre was Kill Bill Vol.1 by Quentin Tarantino, my favorite director of all time (Other than Hitchcock). In the years that followed, we got one excellent Grindhouse movie after another. Kill Bill Vol.2, Once
