The rumble of monstrous footsteps and the tremors of a changing world have echoed onto the small screen in Apple TV+’s “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.” This new series serves as both expansion and exploration of Legendary’s Toho universe, the sprawling cinematic world where creatures that were once only myths — Godzilla, King Kong, and the Titans of Skull Island — now roam with stunning and destructive reality.

“Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” doesn’t just tread familiar ground. Instead, it carves its own path with a story centered around Monarch, the shadowy government organization dedicated to tracking and, sometimes, protecting these titans. The show’s narrative unfolds across two timelines — one in the wake of 2014’s Godzilla, with hints of the events to come in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong, and the others delving into the 1950s to reveal the secret origins of Monarch itself.

The series stars Anna Sawai as Cate, a young woman with a mysterious connection to Monarch following her harrowing survival of Godzilla’s attack on San Francisco.
