Going into The Devil in Ohio, I only knew that I wanted to watch it because Emily Deschanel (playing Suzanne) was starring. What I found was that the whole was truly greater than the sum of its parts. Devil in Ohio is about Mae (played by Madeleine Arthur), who has escaped the cult she grew up in all her life so as not to be their sacrifice. But when she is temporarily taken in by a psychiatrist and her family, things will never be the same again; for any of them.

The Devil in Ohio tries to be a lot of things. A mystery, a horror show, and even a family drama. But it really never succeeds at any of these things. The mystery is most obvious and often blatantly solved by the show itself, only hinting that there might be more to it. Which often turns out to be misdirection or a red herring. The horror aspect is subtle and can, in many cases, be discounted to the gore in the show (which there isn’t much) or the general spookiness that the show seems so insistent on trying, even when nothing really comes out of it. The family drama is the most pervasive and also the most blatant. I really didn’t come to this show to hear about the problems of someone who can afford to have four daughters in a huge house. I know that is somewhat beside the point. But considering the show is about this runaway girl and the terrible…
