While I enjoy a period piece, Apple TV+ has been really racking them up for the past few years. “Franklin” is a much better offering than much of the other content that they approve of. “Franklin” is the story of how Benjamin Franklin negotiated the help of France during the American Revolution and afterward to secure reparations from England for the American Revolution.

“Franklin” is an ensemble cast that does a decent job of showing history as it happens. Michael Douglas (Benjamin Franklin) is definitely the standout performer here. But Daniel Mays playing Edward Bancroft also does an incredible job. Especially in the final couple of episodes where he appears less but his performances are more impactful.

The somewhat disappointing performances are more tied to the meandering writing of the show itself. The entire subplots involving Temple Franklin (Noah Jupe) are absolutely unnecessary and really just serve as filler to the show. Jupe who is 19, perhaps playing younger, really is cemented as being a “teenager” who during that era would be working, married, and owning property. Is constantly called boy or “young Mister Temple.” He is shown as being a contemporary of Marquis de Lafayette (Théodore Pellerin) who was 18 at the time and given a field…
