Hugging by default

This is part 9 where I give myself 5 minutes each day to delve in deeper on the 22 life learnings after 7 days at burning man.
Hugs are powerful; avoid shaking hands if possible (when applicable).
This one is going to be a simple one today. Nothing fancy because giving a good, effective hug requires nothing fancy. Just needs the intent of letting the other person know you appreciate them.
After experiencing the Hug Deli at Burning Man, it solidified in my mind that hugs can be a powerful way to brighten someone’s day. People by nature crave a sense of belonging and physical intimacy. A simple hug can go long ways to achieve that for others. It can be awkward at times because formality in shaking hands has been cemented in our society today.
But my challenge to you (and continually for my future self) is to try defaulting to hugs when applicable the next time you meet someone new or a friend you haven’t seen. And if you want to take it a step up, add a sense of YOU to it. For me, it’s a quick, comfortable massage on the back :).
