The Vanity of American Anarchism

If you spoke to an American Anarchist online these days you’d likely encounter a staunch individualist schooled in the ideologies of Rand (both Paul and Ayn), as most American Anarchists have forgotten the true utility of Anarchism in an oppressive authoritarian state.

Most contemporary American Anarchists preach an ideology of staunch individualism. “You leave me alone, I leave you alone”, and that is that. Initially this rebellious attitude looks good on the surface. Attempt to dig deeper, the whole philosophy falls flat.

This individualist creed also negates the work of the Anarchists of the past. Anarchists have lead and organized labor revolts and unions, Anarchists have spearheaded abolitionist and liberty movements and coordinated systems outside of the Government to support under-served populations despite its current state.

Individual Liberty is important. As is a strong sense of self. My qualm with the current Anarchist movement is that it exists as a safe space for mostly contrarian assholes, podcasters and closet fascists where they can do drugs and disrespect the actual values that should be holding American Anarchism together.
