Thoughts on Glenda

A rant.

The Philippines is a developing country. Sure it has many good things about it but there are also irritating (and unforgivable) realities such as corrupt government officials, hateful crimes and based on what just happened recently (#GlendaPH storm)—bad drainage systems. How bad? As in “expect a flood whenever it rains for more than an hour” bad.

It’s not like that in every place in the Philippines but in most parts in Metro Manila, the country’s capital city, it’s the truth. For example, even if our place is an isolated condo village the main road where our village’s entrance is located easily gets flooded. To add to that, that road only has 4 lanes for both ways (2 for each) so traffic moves slowly by default. Even slower when it’s flooded. Traffic’s just a small issue but the inevitable flood for every big storm/typhoon/whatever you call it that passes through Metro Manila is another case.

They say it’s been a long problem of our country but it irks me to know that it stays as is. Will we ever see the need to improve this? We can’t keep on relying on Ondoy boats, evacuation centers and donations every single time a storm comes. The population is evidently increasing and there will come a time when we can’t save the people that needs saving. Our country needs solutions, specifically how to PREVENT floods and how to react to it.

Glenda’s signal 3 storm in multiple areas have greatly damaged houses, cars, communities, LIVES. It’s not easy to move on from evacuating your home for so long, or from having your car’s windshield fixed , or from you son’s death. Natural calamities like Glenda will happen numerous times in a year and they will happen every year.

Are we just going to sit around in front of our computers ranting about it? (Like what I’m doing now) To be honest, it’s all I can do for now. The Philippines is not like other countries where rallies actually get good results and response from the government. It’s not a country where government moves fast. It’s a country that needs tons of improvement.

If I only I can do something big other than typing this post.

As of now, I’ll just wait for a genie and prepare my three wishes for the country.

trivia: this was supposed to be a “silver linings” post but my intro developed into a longer post thus resulting to a rant.
