Parenting Style Test
I have recently published a post about pseudo-personality tests talking about how psychological tests are not only used in medical fields but also for pure entertainment. Two days ago while I was doing some research for another class, I stumbled across this website that offered an online parenting style test and thought it was extremely interesting. Personally, I haven’t heard of such a test myself but it wouldn’t surprise me that these tests would exist because really nowadays, there are basically tests about everything including which pizza slice are you. So this test apparently includes 42 questions and I pretended to be a parent myself and I answered to all the questions just to see how legitimate this test really was. And as it turns out, it doesn’t seem like any of these pseudo tests that you would just do for fun, this one actually serves a purpose. As it was mentioned in the introduction of the test, research have shown that there are 4 main types of parenting styles: “authoritative, authoritarian, permissive and uninvolved”.
Of course, it is important for parents to maintain a good balance of different styles in order to ensure the optimal growth and psychological development of their children. The article also talks about the importance of parents’ responsiveness as well as the extent to which they are demanding towards their kids. One is not better than the other because both factors are essential to an optimal parenting style. It’s more about balancing the two that we are concerned with. Poor parenting style not only generates an undesirable living environment for the child but can also impact their psychological growth and even their performance at school. At the end of the test, as a result, each responder will receive feedbacks on their results and also a graph interpreting these data collected from the 42 questions answered by each. In my opinion, tests like these should be made mandatory to take for all parents. Schools should highly promote it in order to help parents recognize the strengths and weaknesses in their parenting styles before it’s too late.
