Goku’s message to Gohan: An important lesson for us all

So today, during my regular procrastination session, while I watched some DBZ, Goku said something to Gohan that interested me very much:

“The power of a Super Saiyan comes from a NEED, not a DESIRE!” — Goku

Well, I have no need to unlock my Super Saiyan capabilities. However, like many people I do have my daily struggle to be productive and not procrastinate, and many times I find myself going to sleep with very little done from my to-do list.

Here’s why Goku’s lesson is important for anyone who’s trying to create new habits like me. The reason so many of us fail reach our goals; to stick to our schedule; to do what we need to do; is because deep down we only have a DISIRE to change, but we don’t NEED to change!

We have this desire to create a better life for ourselves, but that’s all that it is, a simple desire a nothing else. And this isn’t enough to push us; to force ourselves to do the things we’re scared of; to do the things we don’t want to do; to beat The Instant Gratification Monkey

Tony Robbins in his book ‘Awaken the Giant within’ states: “First, we must believe, “Something MUST change””. When we turn our desires into needs, our wants turn into musts, and we’re left with no other choice but to force ourselves to do what’s necessary for us change our lives.

Otherwise, we will simply “Flirt” with the idea of creating new habits that will eventually lead to us achieving our goals.

Tim Ferris has a great strategy to create the sense of necessity to do something we don’t want to do: Creating steaks!

Having consequences in place that we don’t ever want to happen will leave us no choice but to do what needs to be done even if we don’t feel like it.

Who would have thought that the answer to all our problems could be found while watching DBZ…

So I suggest we all follow Goku’s advice and turn our desires into needs, because if we don’t, we won’t be able to beat Resistance like Gohan beat Cell… ☺

Stay awesome
