I can’t tell you more about Microsoft’s plans than what they have said publicly at this time, as noted in the paragraph towards the end of the article. They’re initial focus has been on system infrastructure, i.e. rasterisers and DirectWrite. The latest version of the Edge browser (and also Chrome) on Windows is reported as already able to access named instance in variable fonts; I have not tried this personally.
