I Have A Dream For WWDC 2017

Apple will seed the idea that App Store is not a place for mega devs and mega hits only

Apple announced today WWDC 2017. The Worldwide Developers Conference will take place in San Jose, between June 5 and 9. This year’s theme is broad. It’s huge. Hence the aerial style of the #WWDC17 photo.

Technology Alone Is Not Enough.

Apple says. Technology alone is not enough. Technology must intersect with the liberal arts and the humanities. To create new ideas and experiences that push society forward.

I couldn’t have said it better myself. Apple is spot on. In 2017 tech is set to change the world for the better. Everything Apple will be better, faster, cheaper and more pleasing.

Except Apple’s technology itself.

In 2017 Apple’s technology tools for its ecosystem are many, hard and costly [1] to master. Hardware is almost fragmented. iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, Apple TV, the Macs. Services are even worse. iCloud, Siri, iMessage apps, the HealthKit and many more.

It’s impossible for a couple of people to build a successful app. An app and experience that push society forward. An app running smoothly on all iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches and maybe Apple TVs. Maybe the Mac. An app with support for iCloud, Siri, iMessage apps as minimum requirements.

If the app turns out to be unsuccessful, chances are it will be, an indie dev or a tiny team of two will think twice to try again. And again. [2]

How innovative products are born. By not stopping trying

Because that’s how innovative product are born. By not stop trying. That’s how innovative ideas are built. By failing and trying and failing and trying again and again.

That’s why I have a dream for WWDC 2017. Apple will seed the idea that App Store is not a place for mega devs and mega hits only.

I have a dream that Apple will help tiny dev teams to recover from failures and help them try again. And again.

I have a dream that one day this year App Store will feature great new apps from indie devs. Apps that will make people fall in love with their Apple hardware and apps.

I have a dream that technology alone is not enough. Apple will give developers as much love as billions of dollars in profits.

I have a dream.

[1] Cost is time, effort, money, sleepless nights

[2] The truth is that it’s not only about the idea or the product anymore. It’s about marketing dollars for climbing high in the App Store. Networking for reaching to App Store and. The list goes one.
